TWO PALMS at Art Basel 2018

Art Basel

Booth E13

Basel, Switzerland June 14 – 17, 2018

Basel, Switzerland – At the 2018 edition of Art Basel in Switzerland, Two Palms will premier a selection of new works by Cameron Jamie, Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Dana Schutz, and Stanley Whitney alongside Matthew Barney’s seminal Woodburytypes.

The presentation will mark the European debut of Jeff KoonsGazing Ball print series, in which a highly-reflective, optically perfect, cobalt-blue gazing ball is added to prints that reference masterpieces from art history. Looking at the Gazing Ball works, the viewer sees oneself reflected in the mirrored surface at the same time one sees the print. This juxtaposition of art- historical reference with the viewer’s present-day reflection invites a dialogue about the meaning of time and how we transcend it.

Also debuting at Art Basel are ten new works by Dana Schutz, in what is the artist’s first major etching project with Two Palms. Schutz, often regarded by her peers and critics as the best painter of her generation, brings to her etchings the same dynamism that enliven her paintings. The subjects of her etchings represent the good and the bad, the plausible and the fantastical, all while maintaining a healthy dose of humor.

Other highlights include the premier of a rare self-portrait monotype by Elizabeth Peyton and a brand-new etching by the artist depicting Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Two Palms will also present new large-scale watercolor monotypes by Cameron Jamie and Stanley Whitney along with a set of four Woodburytypes by Matthew Barney. Each of Barney’s Woodburytypes is transformed by growths of electroformed copper that have been gilded with nickel and 24 karat gold. The transformation of these images – a Crown Victoria, an Imperial, a Trans am, and a landscape – is typical of Barney’s practice of transgressing his medium of choice. He has repurposed images from his film “River of Fundament” and subjected them to a sort of alchemy that results in a set of images that are entirely new, rich in excess, and ultimately a sensual visual experience.
